Blueberry Pomegranate Smoothie

I figured since it’s Friday, we’d actually get something to EAT today! (Or drink rather, but you get the idea. It goes in your mouth, not on your head or face 🙂 And a smoothie sounded rather spa-ish, wouldn’t you agree? When I asked you to tell me your favorite flavor/scent from Southern Alchemy the blackberry pomegranate came up over and over again. So I thought this smoothie would be perfect since you could easily substitute blackberries for the blueberries.

Now I’m about to say something that could possibly have me stoned by snooty foodies across the blogoshpehere, I don’t really enjoy drinking pomegranate juice. I want to like it because it is SO good for you (more on that in a minute) but I just don’t. I find it strangely over sweet but bitter at the same time. I keep trying to like it because it’s so uber-trendy right now, but I just don’t. However, I found that I LOVE it in smoothies. The flavors blend perfectly with other fruits. The sweetness balances and the bitter tartness compliments it. It adds great flavor while power-packing your smoothie with good-for-you nutrients. So if you’re like me and aren’t too fond of the juice on its own- try it in a smoothie. Chances are it will wow you! Here’s why this is so great.

POM Wonderful Juice: POM Wonderful is well known for its anti-oxidant power. If you hear that all the time and don’t have a clue what it means then this very simple definition is for you: Antioxidants are nature’s way of fighting off potentially harmful molecules in our bodies called free radicals. Free radicals = bad, Antioxidants = awesome. POM Wonderful has more naturally occurring antioxidants than just about anything. In addition to being an antioxidant super power, POM juice is clinically proven to improve both cardiovascular and prostate health. And get this boys (Ya, we know you’re reading- even during spa week…) It’s also been proven to increase erectile function. So there ya have it. Girls go slip your man some POM every morning and see what happens! haha. In all seriousness though, this stuff is wicked good for ya. See here for all kinds of facts.

Blueberries: Blueberries are another antioxidant super power. In addition to that, they’re high in vitamin C and E and science supports that they are beneficial for anti-aging, especially with memory skills and motor function. Plus they are super cute and they taste good 🙂 Here’s some great blueberry facts.

Oranges: Just one orange provides over 100% of your daily vitamin C needs, helping boost your immune system and fight off nasty things like colds. They are also a great source of fiber and help prevent cardiovascular disease. Don’t believe me? See here.

Strawberries: I mostly included strawberries in this smoothie because they taste yummy, but did you know that 1 cup of strawberries has more vitamin C than an orange? They’re also rich in (just guess) antioxidants and have tons of other beneficial phytonutrients. Really, they do.

So that’s why this smoothie isn’t just delicious, it’s doing GREAT things for your body! Don’t you love it when something tastes good and is good for you? Make one up and sip it while you give yourself a facial.

Blueberry-Pomegranate Smoothie

print recipe text only

8oz pomegranate juice*
1/2 C frozen blueberries
1/2 C roughly chopped strawberries (3-4 berries)
1/2 orange, peeled
1 C crushed ice
optional: honey

*If you need to substitute, you could use cranberry juice or concord grape juice, both of which have a lot of health benefits.

Place all ingredients into a blender in the order listed. Process until smooth. If it’s too tart for your liking, add a drizzle of honey!

This makes about 16 oz (a little more actually), so it’s perfect to share. I make it in the morning and I pour half of it right back into the cute POM bottle with a straw for my toddler. He thinks it’s the coolest thing ever.

Perfect accompaniment to any breakfast. Or actually, any time. I call it a smoothie, but it’s really just a slushy fruity drink, so who says it has to be breakfast? Put it in a fancy glass and you’ll feel fancy all day. Or at least for a few minutes until some small person wipes snot on you.

So how have you all liked spa week?? I hope you get some time to pamper yourselves! We already have another great theme week in the works, so it will be popping up some time in the near future.

  1. This looks delicious… I have loved your spa week posts. I am taking a raincheck on everything because MY week has been anything BUT a spa week. From an unexpected funeral, to getting sick, to having a wedding to cater tomorrow. But next week I have set a goal to try at least two of your spa week goodies:) Thanks so much!
