Dirty Diet Coke

Dirty Diet Coke is simple, fast, and way more interesting than a plain soda. A splash of citrus and a hint of cherry give Diet Coke a little extra zip without making it overly sweet. It takes about 30 seconds to throw it together, and works just as well for an afternoon pick-me-up as it does for serving friends. You’ll have a hard time going back to regular Diet Coke after this!

This recipe is more of a formula than a rule. Once you’ve made it, it’s easy to adjust based on what you have on hand, or who you’re serving. Combine different sodas with different syrups, and the variations are truly endless!

This recipe makes 1 serving. Just for you. No one else. Go hide somewhere with a lock on the door and enjoy.

Ingredients Needed

  • coconut syrup – I ordered mine from Amazon, but you can find them in most stores.
  • crushed ice
  • fresh lime
  • Diet Coke
  • half and half – technically optional, but not really in my opinion!

How to Make a Dirty Diet Coke

This is a simple overview of the recipe, you’ll find a full printable recipe below!

  1. Add coconut syrup to a large glass and fill halfway with crushed ice.
  2. Squeeze fresh lime over the ice and drop the limes into the glass.
  3. Pour in Diet Coke, add a splash of half-and-half if using, and give it a quick stir.

Our Best Tips & Variation Ideas

  • Use cold ingredients. Make sure your soda and lime are cold; it keeps the drink crisp and refreshing.
  • Add a garnish: a fresh mint sprig and a few maraschino cherries add a nice touch.
  • Crushed ice is best: Smaller ice chills faster and helps mix the syrup and lime flavor more evenly without watering it down too fast.
  • Fresh lime only: Fresh lime juice adds sharp citrus brightness that really lifts the drink; bottled lime won’t give it anywhere near the same pop.
  • Adjust to taste: If the coconut flavor is too sweet, add a little extra lime or use less syrup; if you want it sweeter, a tiny splash of more syrup will do the trick.
  • Variations: This recipe is more of a formula, and can be mixed up so many different ways using different sodas and syrups. Here are just a few favorites!
    • Dr. Pepper + coconut syrup + cream
    • Diet Coke + raspberry + lime
    • Sprite + coconut + lime

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use bottled lime juice instead of fresh?

We don’t recommend it. Avoid if you can, it won’t have that same bright kick.

I want to serve this at a party. How should I do it?

We’d recommend getting a mixture of syrups and sodas, some small cubed ice, half-and-half (or other creamers), and letting people go to town with their favorite concoctions for a dirty soda bar.

Questions & Reviews

  1. Got to Torani’s website…. you will be AMAZED at all of the goodness there. SO many syrups, so little time. Dirty Dr. Pepper is THA BOMB!!!

  2. Yum! I love adding a little torani to my diet sodas! This sounds delicious! I also love any kind of diet lemon lime soda with sugar free black cherry and vanilla! Tastes almost as good as a real shirley temple! 🙂

  3. I’m laughing reading your post because Diet Coke is my vice and I use the exact same rational – the number of vices available to me are so small that waking up after two night time feedings and helping myself to a Diet Coke doesn’t seem all that bad. I might have to try this but I’m a purest when it comes to my Diet Coke.

  4. Where do you find the coconut syrup? I’ve looked in all the stores, and haven’t been able to find it except online.

    1. I got mine from Amazon, but yes, you can find it at World Market (we don’t have one where I live) or you can order them from the Torani website. Some kitchen/restaurant supply stores sell them locally, too.

    2. If you have a Gordmans near you they sell a variety of Torrani syrups. They’re cheaper than World Market too.

  5. I’m going to be trying this…but with regular Coke. I know it will make my usual day seems like a tropical escape. My sister sometimes adds a splash of coconut rum to her Dr. Pepper – and has what she calls a “Dr. Palibu”…lol. Thanks for sharing this recipe. Oh, and I’m sure my dieting rock bottom in no way involves brown rice. *wink

  6. This is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. At the beginning of the year, I gave up Diet Coke because it had become an unhealthy obsession. Now, I do allow myself one per week as a special “mom treat”. This would be a fun way to make it even more special! Thanks for another amazing recipe!!

  7. I haven’t had a soda in 2 months but I am so tempted to try this just for fun. I can stop again any time I want, right? Loved the “hyper little voice” comment. Thanks for making me smile when I am also dragging from a late night 4th of July block party with the neighbors. It’s criminal to have to get up early for work today.

  8. My first word was Pepsi too! 😉 This looks heavenly, though as a devoted Dr. Pepper drinker, I’ll be going that way as well…thanks for the idea!

    Cheers!
