Dirty Diet Coke is simple, fast, and way more interesting than a plain soda. A splash of citrus and a hint of cherry give Diet Coke a little extra zip without making it overly sweet. It takes about 30 seconds to throw it together, and works just as well for an afternoon pick-me-up as it does for serving friends. You’ll have a hard time going back to regular Diet Coke after this!
This recipe is more of a formula than a rule. Once you’ve made it, it’s easy to adjust based on what you have on hand, or who you’re serving. Combine different sodas with different syrups, and the variations are truly endless!
This recipe makes 1 serving. Just for you. No one else. Go hide somewhere with a lock on the door and enjoy.

Ingredients Needed
- coconut syrup – I ordered mine from Amazon, but you can find them in most stores.
- crushed ice
- fresh lime
- Diet Coke
- half and half – technically optional, but not really in my opinion!

How to Make a Dirty Diet Coke
This is a simple overview of the recipe, you’ll find a full printable recipe below!
- Add coconut syrup to a large glass and fill halfway with crushed ice.
- Squeeze fresh lime over the ice and drop the limes into the glass.
- Pour in Diet Coke, add a splash of half-and-half if using, and give it a quick stir.
Our Best Tips & Variation Ideas
- Use cold ingredients. Make sure your soda and lime are cold; it keeps the drink crisp and refreshing.
- Add a garnish: a fresh mint sprig and a few maraschino cherries add a nice touch.
- Crushed ice is best: Smaller ice chills faster and helps mix the syrup and lime flavor more evenly without watering it down too fast.
- Fresh lime only: Fresh lime juice adds sharp citrus brightness that really lifts the drink; bottled lime won’t give it anywhere near the same pop.
- Adjust to taste: If the coconut flavor is too sweet, add a little extra lime or use less syrup; if you want it sweeter, a tiny splash of more syrup will do the trick.
- Variations: This recipe is more of a formula, and can be mixed up so many different ways using different sodas and syrups. Here are just a few favorites!
- Dr. Pepper + coconut syrup + cream
- Diet Coke + raspberry + lime
- Sprite + coconut + lime
Frequently Asked Questions
We don’t recommend it. Avoid if you can, it won’t have that same bright kick.
We’d recommend getting a mixture of syrups and sodas, some small cubed ice, half-and-half (or other creamers), and letting people go to town with their favorite concoctions for a dirty soda bar.

Questions & Reviews
The heavens just parted and I could swear I heard angels singing…. now to grab some diet coke!
I learned about these last summer and got all my friends hooked on them. Now I’m seeing them everywhere! I asked my husband last night if it makes me a hipster, since I knew about it first. He said, “not when it concerns diet coke.” Touche.
This looks yuuuumy…. 😉
Substitute “Diet Coke” for “Diet Dr Pepper”, and I think we have the same list of vices. So, I’m right there with you, Sister! This looks so good, though, that I think I might have to give Diet Coke another shot!
Do it with a Diet Dr. Pepper!
Sorry! That sounded bossy. I just got excited, haha.
Dirty Diet Cokes have become my newest obsession after seeing a link on Pinterest and thinking that was about one of the most genious inventions EVER. And no, I DON’T use sugar free syrup. I think a 90 calorie treat isn’t too bad in the big scheme of things. But adding half and half?!? Now that’s what I call DIRRRRRY!! Thank you, Kate, for always looking for was to make a good thing a great thing!
I had all of the ingredients except lime, but couldn’t wait to try one. OMG…it’s soooo good! And the best part is I can drink this and stay low carb using sugar free syrup and heavy cream. Thank you!
Add a splash of rum would top that off nicely!
The addition of a splash of half and half made me think of Laverne (of Laverne & Shirley) and her signature drink of Milk & Pepsi. (Now I’ve really gone and shown my age!) lol
And since Pepsi is my cola of choice I might have to give this a try with some Pepsi. I just can’t seem to choke down a Coke when I know I can also use the Coke as a cleaner to clean my toilet and showers and other things. 😉
I am trapped at home today with no way to try this. WAHHHHH!!!!!
Wow! This sounds delicious! I wish I had everything I needed for this now. It’s been a rough day!
Would coconut extract work? I don’t drink diet sodas, but if you think adding the syrup to regular coke would make it too sweet, I am thinking coconut extract would be a good option. Does the syrup add any other flavors that I would be missing out on if I used the extract? I find myself adding it to most recipes that call for coconut milk (I love it in your pineapple cilantro rice and in smoothies) as I am always looking for more coconut flavor.
I’m sure there’s a way, although you would need much less and it will add an alcohol-y flavor. You could always track down the sugar-free syrup just to keep the proportions the same! 🙂
Amazon.com sells sugar free syrup. I use it in both diet and regular dirty soda drinks. And if you are a prime member 2 day shipping is free
