I recently got a request for some kind of eggnog French toast. And I had to double-check, then TRIPLE-check our archives because I was so sure we would have something like that. We don’t. We have this amazing overnight French toast, but not an eggnog variety. Apparently we’ve failed you all. So I put together this Overnight Eggnog French Toast, which is basically dessert, but if you call it French toast and serve it with bacon and orange juice, it’s totally breakfast food. (Sidenote: I think this rule can also be applied to all desserts. Breakfast cheesecake? YES.)

French Toast
- Bread – Brioche, challah, or French bread are all great choices. It’s best if it’s a day old!
- Full fat eggnog
- Eggs
- Vanilla
- Rum flavoring – Or spiced rum if you prefer.
- Pumpkin pie spice
Topping
- Granulated sugar
- Brown sugar
- Pumpkin pie spice
- Orange zest
- Pecans
- Butter
- Sweetened whipped cream – Optional, for serving.

How to Make Overnight Eggnog French Toast
- Cut the bread into 1″ cubes and place in a greased 9x 13 baking dish.
- In the jar of a blender or a medium mixing bowl, combine the eggnog, eggs, vanilla, rum/rum flavoring, and pumpkin pie spice. Blend or whisk until very well combined. Pour evenly over the bread cubes and make sure all the cubes have contact with the liquid. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
- When ready to bake, preheat oven to 350°F. To make the topping, combine finely chopped pecans, orange zest, brown and white sugars, and butter. The orange isn’t overwhelming and it’s a nice, natural complement to the warm spices in egg nog.
- Uncover the bread mixture and sprinkle the topping over the bread. Bake for 45-55 minutes or until golden brown on top and set in the middle. Allow to stand for 5-10 minutes before cutting into squares. This can be served with whipped cream, maple syrup, or sprinkled with powdered sugar.

Storing and Other Tips
- Store leftover French toast in an airtight container in the refrigerator and enjoy within 3-5 days for best results.
- We love serving this French toast with a side of crispy bacon and fresh fruit.

Frequently Asked Questions
Prep your French toast up to 24 hours in advance. Cover tightly and refrigerate until ready to bake.
While I haven’t tried it myself, the custard mixture would likely work very well for individual slices of French toast cooked on the stovetop. Be sure to use a sturdy variety of bread that will hold up to being dipped in the custard.
Yep! All of these flavors would still be delicious without the eggnog if you aren’t a fan. Sub in whole milk or half and half. If you’d like, add a splash of vanilla and a sprinkle of nutmeg.
If you have a nut allergy, or if you’re just out of nuts, it’s ok to leave them out!
