Have you guys ever had an egg cream? It’s kind of a funny thing because it’s basically a chocolate soda that doesn’t have eggs OR cream in it. Chocolate syrup, milk, and soda water are whisked together, and voila! It’s delicious.
I’m not calling this an egg cream because people feel VERY strongly about their regional foods (this one hails from Brooklyn), so I’m just calling this a peppermint chocolate soda. But it’s pretty much an egg cream.

- Soda Water – You can use very cold club soda, seltzer, or sparkling water.
- Peppermint Syrup – I like Torani. You can find flavored syrups at World Market, Amazon, US Foods CHEF’STORE (used to be Cash & Carry), or your favorite coffee shop.
- Chocolate Syrup – I used Torani dark chocolate syrup from my grocery store, but any chocolate syrup will work.
- Milk – Whole milk is best here.

Sitting at Bluebird’s soda counter and sharing a sundae was one of our favorite newlywed dates. Man, I miss Logan.
Wow, never heard of chocolate soda. I must love it, cause I love chocolate. And I love your chocolate/peppermint obsession 🙂
But I’m very sad that my browser doesn’t come up with an “Older posts” link at the bottom of the page so I can browse through what you’ve been posting for the past weeks. Do you guys have a fix for that? 🙂
It’s absolutely luxurious to own a soda maker, and my SodaStream now lets me make delish things like this on a whim because I never used to keep seltzer on hand. It always went flat before I could use it. I use the SS daily, at will. Sigh. Such contentment.
Sounds yummy! Gonna have to try. I keep meaning to ask this question every time I make an Italian soda: what is the difference between Club Soda, Seltzer Water, Tonic Water, and now Soda Water? Can you pretty much use them interchangeably?
I have a request…. I really loved the Mother’s Day gift guide you did this year and was wondering if you had more gift ideas for Christmas? Like stuff for moms, dads, and kids? Love your site and cookbooks!
Okay Kate, I know this isn’t actually the dirty diet coke post … but the peppermint syrup reminded me that I needed to tell you … I’ve tried the dirty diet coke’s in all the drive-thru’s around town and your dirty diet coke “recipe” is THE BEST!! As in … I’ve not had one near as good … anywhere. I’ve stocked my pantry with coconut syrup … it’s my favorite afternoon “treat”. You are genius 🙂
And … i’m missing the “older posts” link at the bottom of the home tab string … are there plans to bring it back, It’s helpful to scroll thru posts newest to oldest. Thanks!
Love the Bluebird! This will be a fun treat. Thx 🙂
